Disco Dean Karns Gets Funky!

One look at “Disco” Dean Karns and you will get as advertised. He’s what I call a “Bigger Boy”, he’s a funny, confident, clever guy, that likes pink. One conversation with “Disco” and you’ll notice his comprehension of the sport in many facets. His relationship with his father is one many sons and fathers envy. And his love for drag racing is undeniable. This past weekend in Indiana is living proof that Dean Karns is (pardon the pun) down with the funk! This past weekend started with Dean and his father (Dean Karns Sr) Pappa Disco sitting down planning out a weekend to race. There we’re many options, head 8 hours south for the most cash and a threatening forecast, race locally for a decent purse, or maybe just take a trip to INDY for his first NHRA Lucas Oil Divisional Race. Pappa Disco is a long time NHRA supporter with his son being on the other side of the spectrum being a multi time Big Money Bracket Race Champion.
So the decision was made to load up the “Candy Crush” Toyota pickup truck with his wife Jackie’s convincing, a last minute phone call from Scotty Reinshield, a Division 3 Super Street Champion, and run to Indy for a go in Super Street. It took some convincing from fellow friends and racers to pry the big fella out of his dead set ways, but Friday at noon Disco looked like the odd ball showing up to the party late. And with that forced to pit in the mud. With mud comes a stuck motorhome and trailer… to the frame. And without being teched in and first call for Super Street on the PA system, Disco locked in the front hubs and mud bogged his way out to pavement. So with NO THROTTLE STOP, never making a ¼ mile pass in this truck, never hitting the .500 pro tree in this truck it’s time to go. Now this truck is well capable to run under 10.90, and no throttle stop. What do you do? One option is “short shifting” the car, but it’s not an exact science and not the favorable strategy amongst competitors. But with limited options it seemed the best way to go. And so Disco does a burnout, stages the car, hits the tree, the truck shifts noticeably short, makes a nice clean run down the ¼ mile. He pulls around the corner to the timing shack and the gentleman says “Uhhh, we don’t have one for you. Our printer is broke.” And so with the curiosity dancing on his mind of how the truck performed in the first time trial, Disco waits with countless other racers and finally gets the all important information on the time slip. “10.91, heck, I can live with that! We got a race car!” is Dean’s thoughts on the pass, but there was much more work to do.
After the mud bog’s of unloading the car, the fine folks at Indy took a tractor to try and pull out the rig. Well, that got stuck. Bring on the front end loader. Got the tractor out so hook up BOTH of em. Tractor got stuck again!! So eventually it was two front end loaders that got the rig out.
On the second time run, Disco makes some adjustments to the shift time and makes another respectable time run. Returns to the trailer hops on the scooter to find out what the next days schedule holds. One time run at 8:30 in the morning. He can’t believe it so he asks a NHRA Tech official. “So you’re telling me we have one time run early in the morning, and that’s it?” the official replied with a simple “Yup”. And the wheels start turning. Disco makes one more time run and by now has this whole Super Street thing figured out. Hops out of the truck and starts Mapquesting local tracks. Finds that Muncie has a regular points night race within reasonable distance. Pays half decent. And tells Papa Disco “Hey, you want to go to Muncie? It’s $1,400 to win” “I ain’t loading up all this stuff, just to leave, unload it again and race, just to come back here and do it again. If you want to go load it all up and lets go.” Well that was about all the motivation Disco needed as he closed up shop in Indy and cruised into Muncie Dragway with plenty of time. 1st round was routine as he lit the Disco Ball on his side of the track and felt this was the right decision. Next round came around and he spots a “disadvantaged racer”. A tubbed out 2012 Camaro with stock front wheels and seemed by the looks of it a cake walk into round three. As they pull forward Disco finds out he missed the so called “disadvantaged racer” by one pair, but nothing changed his mental strategy, until in the water box. He watches the Camaro run down the track, and go into a plume of smoke and dust. Run across the track, barrel roll, hit the wall and cause all sorts of twisted damage in only the third pass on the machine. We’re happy to announce the driver was beat up pretty bad, but will recover.
Few more rounds and Disco finds himself in the final. Now by this time it’s late, he’s pretty tired. And he still has to run back to Indy to be ready for 1st round at 8 AM in Super Street. The final didn’t shake down his way as Disco Dean arrived second to the stripe by .0019. But not a bad night. Turned a day of nothing planned into some extra dollars in his pocket. By the time the rig pulled back into Indy it’s 3 AM, gotta be up by 7 AM to get everything unloaded and ready for 1st round. And then go compete.
1st round fell his way by a comfortable margin and steadied his mind for the rest of the day as he has the 2nd in sights. Some minor adjustments and Disco makes another good run and into the bye in 3rd round.

With the free time run behind him Disco faces Ed Jirousek in round four. Ed behind on the tree but able to run under represents a .005 package running down the ¼ mile. Disco knowing he caught most of the tree sees he can’t get there and decides to get behind for the win.

With some confidence rolling into round number five Disco see’s something special in the road ahead. And his first chance at winning the Wally trophy on his first attempt. But Phil Smida the Super Street Super Power stands in his way. Phi is known for being a tough competitor and one of the most disciplined in Super Class racing. So when the tree falls and Disco is .055 on the tree it seems like an easy victory for Smida. But there’s one thing in Disco’s pocket for advantage. Not so much the speed of the Candy Crush truck, but the lack there of. The differential of Smida’s MPH to Karn’s is very noticeable and changes this whole round. Disco basically runs Smida as deep as he can and stops killing over 20 MPH from his previous time runs pushing Phil .014 under the 10.90 index as Disco runs 10.899 placing Disco one winlight away from a victory.

Knowing he got away with one Disco is faced with the challenge to calm his nerves and ready himself for his first NHRA final. And it seems like he got it together as he held reaction time advantage against Dave Ancel. Another run where Disco pulls out his “Bop Bop and Drop” move placing him .015 above the 10.90 index with a winlight in his lane after feeding Ancel .056 at the stripe.

“This was one of the best things I could ever share with my dad, we’re best friends and always race together. I can’t imagine more fun and how it all happened.” Was Disco’s remarks on the win in Super Street. It’s rare that a racer will ever leave one event to race another and have any type of success in either one, yet Dean Karns was able to pull off a runner up at Muncie and a win at Indy in the Lucas Oil Super Street event. It’s truly a special weekend to tuck away and keep for the whole Karns family. Disco would like to thank everyone that helps out his racing program starting with his father Dean Karns Sr. Diamond Race Cars, Pro-Filer Heads, Matt Hornbuckle at PEM, Marco Abruzzi, Karsten Blume at KB Carbs, Chris & Tom at Mickey Thompson, Duncan Oil Race Fuels, JEG’s, Vic at Wiseco, and Darren at Comp Cams.
Till next time, thanks for reading.
