i have a canon xha1 and not sure what to set my sequence/capture/device control presets to when logging/capturing.

then there is the problem of exporting to quicktime and what settings to use here??

what is the difference between the 50 and the 60 (1080i).

also how do i know if it is recording at 24/25 fps and does this affect my presets??

ive burnt to a dvd but the HD quality on dvd just isnt the same quality definition as the original tapes (rushes). In fact -it looks HORRIBLE!!

    what am i doing wrong??!!

Where are you? 50 and 60 define the frame rate. What you shoot determines what preset you use.

    All the best,

  • 50i is a PAL framerate (non North America)
    60i is NTSC framerate.

May want to crack open the manual for the camera for that.

If you state what you are doing it maybe easier to give advise.

I forgot to add in my last post this is what my xha1 is set to:

    comp. output: 1080i/576i
    frame rate: 50i
    signal: HD
    image size: LW1920x1080

can you advise me of what my presets should be on for log/capture and what firewire setting i should have? then what settings for converting to quicktime?

ive been playing for a couple of days but the final quality on dvd is horrible and my boris text keeps jittering!

    thanks!!!

i actually dont think i know what im doing!! makes it hard to explain!!

I forgot to add in my last post this is what my xha1 is set to:

comp. output: 1080i/576i (what does the 576i mean)??
    frame rate: 50i
    signal: HD
    image size: LW1920x1080

i imported my xha1 to FCP footage under presets:

    sequence: HDV 1080i 50
    capture: HDV
Device control: sony HDV 1080i 50 fire wire.

it all seems to go to sh*t in the export from FCP to quicktime.
I have tried exporting and experimenting with different settiings as quick time movie and quick time conversion. either the images jitter/or the crawling text jitters.

does this help you….to help me?!

I’m assuming you are in PAL land. 50i

Out of FCP if you Export to a quicktime movie for encoding make sure the “Current Settings” is what is selected but…

especially with HDV footage I found that if you export your timeline – Export> Using Compressor. This will send your seq to Compressor, there select the PAL DVD preset. give me the total length of all the video that will be on the DVD and I can suggest a bitrate.

The way is the slowest way to encode and it ties up Compressor and FCP for the entire process but you should see much better quality.

yes – PAL land!! down under 🙂

it is roughly 3 minutes in length! not much at all.

im so used to working in SD. this is the first time ive tried to export HD to quick time and burn to dvd.

do you think because im using iDVD this may be affecting the quality/final product? i seem to be getting artifact in the iDVD process as well!!

Okay, for that short definitely do what I posted above. Export> With Compressor.

Make a new m2v preset in Compressor

    File Format: MPEG-2
    Extention: m2v
    Stream Usage SD DVD

    Settings:
    VIDEO FORMAT TAB
    Video Format: PAL
    Frame Rate: 25
    Aspect Ratio: 16:9
    Field Dominance: Upper

    QUALITY TAB
    Mode: One Pass CBR
    Average Bit Rate: 7Mbps
Max. Bit Rate: will be grayed out
Motion Estimation: Good (does not come into play)

Leave GOP and EXTRA tabs as is.

Then use one of the Dolby Digital Professional 2.0 presets for the audio.

Encode this and you will have an audio and video file to bring into DVDSP, author a simple DVD with that. Stay away from iDVD if you want better quality.

[Brydie Sheen] “do you think because im using iDVD this may be affecting the quality/final product?”

There is a reason Apple calls the applications in Final Cut Studio “pro apps.”

i think the main prob has been my import settings…..i’ve spent the last 24 hours exporting to DVDSP as Mpeg2 conversions and DVPAL and others!!!!

All round Mpeg2 had an average quality (much definition lost). Qtimepro conversion to DVPAL rendered/compressed boris text to look A class super hot. Unfortunately the DVPAL export didnt do the original footage any justice. While it looked HD on my DVD burn/TV, but people in shot were pausing/jumping etc..

I cant use compressor either because it wont SUBMIT anything!!!!!!

I think my main problem may be in my import settings…..grrrrr so will have to redigitise under prores instead of HDV….and try all this again.

fingers cross this works!! Well, at least ive learned alot.

goodluck anyone moving from sd to hd (canon xha1)!!!
